What Is Class in Horse Racing?
Class measures the quality of competition a horse has faced. A horse dropping from a $50,000 claiming race to a $25,000 claimer is taking a significant class drop — often a sign the trainer expects a big performance at the easier level.
The Class Ladder
- Maiden Special Weight: First-time starters and non-winners, no claiming tag
- Maiden Claiming: Non-winners with a price tag — lowest tier
- Claiming: $5,000 to $100,000+ — any horse can be bought
- Allowance: Non-claiming, conditions based on wins/earnings
- Stakes: Top tier — graded stakes (G1, G2, G3) are the best
Class Drops vs. Class Rises
A class drop is one of the strongest angles in handicapping. When a horse that has been competitive at a higher level drops to easier company, it's often the best horse in the field. Conversely, a class rise (first time against tougher) is the most common way to lose a bet on a consistent horse.
